Training Programme for Menopause Care
BMS/FFPRHC Special Skills in Menopause.
This
programme has been developed in conjunction with the Faculty of Family Planning
and Reproductive Healthcare and offers two levels of training:
A. Basic certificate - aimed at
- GPs
- GPwSIs
- Doctors working in family planning/sexual health /community gynaecology
setting
- Middle or staff grade gynaecologists
B. Advanced certificate - aimed at doctors wishing to lead a menopause
service
Training Programme Structure
The hand book of the British Menopause Society is used as the core
text.
The programme requires attendance at an approved training
course.
The two day training course is case based, practical, interactive and
workshop based. It can be taken alone but does not signify competence
to practice. This might be suitable for
- Any interested GP or sexual health doctor
- Specialist and practice nurses working regularly to provide women’s
health advice and management.
- Holders of the DFFP wishing to update in reproductive healthcare
The next course is 25th-26th
September 2008 in Edinburgh. Details
of this and other courses can be found at: www.thebms.org.uk/meetings.php Please
contact Mike Gray on 01872 242192 or mike@crescetis.com for
further information.
Practical training should be begun within three years of the course.
This is supervised by a principal trainer in menopause who will conduct
a learning needs assessment and plan a suitable and individualized programme.
Skills training, competencies agreed and all relevant tutorials and discussion
are recorded in a logbook (ffprhc.org.uk/pdfs/Menopause.pdf)
Certification
Membership of the British Menopause Society is required before the certificate
can be granted and in order to keep up to date.
When the required level of competencies are met a "Certificate in Menopause
Care" can be awarded. This would indicate the ability to practice to
a standard desirable for work within an established clinic or in primary
care. Further training, a course project and a higher level of competency
can lead to the award of an "Advanced Certificate in Menopause Care" which
would recognize the ability to lead a Menopause Service.
The three day BMS/RCOG training course can be offered as an alternative
for those seeking the advanced certificate but the interactive style
of the two day course is more suitable for the basic certificate.
Trainers
Trainers are jointly approved by both the British Menopause
Society and the Faculty. They have both extensive experience of working
in the field of menopause and either Training the Trainers or Faculty
Registered Trainer status.
